Join us and celebrate Haute Floral Couture at its very finest. Join us in supporting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.
Presented by BMO – Harris Private Banking, the For the Love of the Bloom Gala will be an evening that is sure to excite all your senses. Gastronomic food, dancing and a floral fashion show will dazzle all those in attendance. The master floral artists from the Canadian Academy of Floral Art have prepared a floral fashion show that will leave you breathless.
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation are working towards a future without breast cancer and your support is needed. The funds raised at this event will assist the Foundations in continuing to fund breast cancer research, education and awareness programs in Canada.
The statistics show that one in nine Canadian women is expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime. However, the Foundations are making progress. Earlier detection through screening programs and more effective treatments following surgery are helping to save lives.
Today, individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have an 87% likelihood of living for five years after diagnosis. This is the difference that research is making. Your support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation will help this movement of hope and progress bloom.
We would be honored to count you as the host of a table or simply to ensure your participation. The details of the evening are included in this package. We thank you in advance for your sincere cooperation and hope you will join us in making a difference.

A little-known treasure in the national capital
Situated near the effluence of Ottawa's Rideau Canal - across the street from the Château Laurier and a stone's throw from Parliament Hill's East Block - the Government Conference Centre is a key historic element among the buildings immediately surrounding the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
The building, originally a railway station, became the Conference Centre in 1969, under the direction of the late Right Honourable Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, who wanted a site reserved specifically for government-hosted events. In this capacity, the Centre has served as a welcome spot for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, His Royal Highness Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, His Holiness the late Pope John Paul II, and Commonwealth and international heads of state. As well, it has been a meeting spot for international discussions on topics ranging from land mines and human rights to the world economy. In 1981, it served as the international press centre for the G8 Summit in Canada and was also the site of Prime Minister Trudeau's Federal-Provincial Constitutional conferences which led to the repatriation of the Canadian Constitution in 1982.
For the first 55 years of its existence, the building was the Grand Trunk Railway's Union Station. Inspired by Roman and beaux-arts concepts and designed in 1908 by Montreal architects Ross and MacFarlane, it opened its doors in 1912 - and it's been a hub of bustling activity ever since.
Feeding directly into Ottawa's downtown core and linked by an underground tunnel to the Château Laurier, Union Station was the city's first point of entry for railway passengers of all walks of life - including immigrants, war veterans, national political figures and such international dignitaries as Japan's Crown Prince Akihito, Britain's Sir Winston Churchill, and China's Madame Chiang Kai Shek.
When the railway shut down in 1966, the action did not subside. The following year the building entered the Government of Canada's real estate portfolio and became "Centennial Centre" - featuring public exhibitions celebrating Canada's 100th birthday throughout 1967. Two years later it would become the Government Conference Centre we know today. Participants attending the For the Love of the Bloom gala will have an opportunity during the evening to visit this unique but little-known venue in the nation's capital.

The timing of the event is all the more meaningful for both Foundations given that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Across the country, tremendous efforts are being made to raise funds for breast cancer research, education, awareness and support for those affected by this disease. Our ultimate goal is a future without breast cancer. Proceeds from this special event will reinforce our efforts and our common mission, helping us to reach that goal.
The Executive Director of the QBCF, Suzanne LeBreux, is inspired by CAFA’s commitment to the cause. “We can continue our fight thanks to the outstanding support of partners like CAFA. We’re heartened by the significant results we are now seeing. The breast cancer survival rate has increased by 25 percent over the past 20 years. We’re on the right path. An estimated 22,700 women in Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. And an estimated 5,400 women will die. We salute the generosity of talented CAFA President, Joël-Marc Frappier and his team, who are organizing this tremendous event in support of the fight against breast cancer.”
“Breast cancer is a very complex disease. Although much progress has been made in the areas of early diagnosis and treatment, there is still much work to be done. Events like For the Love of the Bloom are so important in raising vital funds to support the work of the Foundation,” explains Colleen Fleming, CEO of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Central Office. “We extend our appreciation to CAFA and wish its members much success with this unique event,” says Ms. Fleming.
